Best of 2007 : Music

I was writing this really long and detailed (It was amazing.) post on my top ten of 2007, and my grandparent’s computer (along with my PC stupidity… Mac users unite) helped me delete it all. That said, I am not re-typing the whole thing again, so I will give an abbreviated version here. My list is for all the artists I came back to constantly this year, regardless of when albums were released.

If you’d like to hear selections from my top 10, please visit my “Top 10 of 2007 Playlist” by clicking here.

Number 10: Bonde Do Role. Great band, though they just split up.

Number 9: 60s Tunes from America and France. Some artists I listened to: Sylvie Vartan, Frankie Valli, Jacques Dutronc, The Crystals, The Dovells.

Here’s a video from Jacques Dutronc. “Les Cactus.”

Number 8: Gravy Train!!!!. Trashy good ole’ fun. Saw them when they came through Tucson to promote their new album All The Sweet Stuff. Though their song “Double Decker Supreme” is my favorite.

Number 7: M.I.A. – Kala. “Paper Planes” has been a staple at parties since this fall.

Number 6: The Tough Alliance. Though they recently released a new album, it was their earlier work I was obsessed with last winter. I’ve since heard their new work, which is more developed and interesting. Surf pop meets indie electronica.

Number 5: New Order. “True Faith” may be the song this year that has been played the most on my iTunes.

Number 4: Jens Lekman. Everything about this man is amazing. If you haven’t heard him, you are missing out. Check out his songs “Black Cab,” “Maple Leaves” and “Your Arms Around Me.” His new album Night Falls Over Kortedala is excellently executed and patently “Jens.”

Number 3: CSS (Cansei De Ser Sexy).Portuguese for “I’m tired of being sexy.” I really like this band, despite my intense disappointment in their iPod Touch glory. If they can maintain their aesthetic while doing something new on their next album, I will be impressed. I saw them perform last fall with Ladytron; Lovefoxx danced with me!

Number 2: The Fiery Furnaces. Though I just found out about their new album Widow City, their album Bitter Teawas on heavy rotation throughout the year. The release of their new album just cements their position at number 2 for me. I saw them live earlier in the year, and their live show was incredibly innovative. New arrangements for all the songs… not just a live regurgitation of the album.

Number 1: The Knife. I’ve loved them for quite a while now, but this year was definitely the year of The Knife. They were on nearly every mixed cd I made, and “Heartbeats” was on heavy rotation at Boston/Allston’s indie dance night “The Pill” at Great Scott. Since I left Boston, I miss this dance night tremendously, and “Heartbeats” definitely reminds me of my time in Beantown.

So, that’s it. If you’d like to hear selections from my top 10, please visit my “Top 10 of 2007 Playlist” by clicking here.
